Centre for Research on Social Inclusion
'Concept of Labour' Workshop
Wednesday 29 November 2006
Work plays a crucial role in shaping the quality of life. It can bestow dignity or it can be a source of degradation. It can dominate us or be a vital source of self-expression.
This workshop on the concept of labour will explore some of the key philosophical problems that arise in relation to work, notably: the problem of its definition; the place and significance of work in the subject's life, the debate around the centrality of work; the place of work in social life, the definition and description of the social division of labour.
Speakers are invited to revisit the classical philosophical literature on work (including Adam Smith, Hegel, Marx, and Hannah Arendt) and to offer critical perspectives on contemporary theoretical approaches to work.
