CENTRE FOR RESEARCH ON SOCIAL INCLUSION TAKES A CENTRAL ROLE AT MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY
On Monday 28 April, the Centre for Research on Social Inclusion (CRSI) at Macquarie University celebrated five years of existence by opening a dedicated research space on campus. The opening featured special guests Hon Senator Ursula Stephens, Parliamentary Secretary Assisting the Prime Minister for Social Inclusion and the Hon Maxine McKew MP, Member for Bennelong.
Social inclusion is a strategic priority for the University, and CRSI is uniquely positioned to provide a central focus for pulling together the theory and practice of inclusivity. A recognised leader in the field of social inclusion, CRSI addresses these issues from many angles, developing theoretical analysis and concrete, real-world solutions.
To thrive in a globalised environment, Australia needs to draw on the cultural richness, unique experiences and social interactions of all its diverse citizens," explained newly appointed Director, Associate Professor Marion Maddox.
Research undertaken in the Centre will assist this objective by determining how society can benefit from the multifaceted skills and knowledge of people of diverse ages, genders and sexual orientations, linguistic and cultural backgrounds, religious traditions and life experiences."
A recent project of CRSI to offer tangible, real-world solutions is the StepOne website, which provides guidance and practical resources to councils and community groups interested in implementing community harmony initiatives. StepOne is the fruition of a year-long Building Neighbourhood Community Harmony Project which involved Macquarie partnering with three councils around Australia to explore the role of local government interventions in improving interethnic relations and building a sustainable community.
The opening was held on Monday 28 April. A major partnership with the Centre's newest industry partner, the Red Cross, was announced at the event.
