About the Launch
Dr Jonathan Welch AM and the Centre for Research on Social Inclusion is launching the inaugural Social Inclusion Week in the form of a Q&A Forum to be held on Monday, November 23rd 2009 from 6pm - 8pm at Macquarie University.

The panelists represent those working closely with issues of social inclusion in Australia. They will discuss and debate the priorities for Australia and problematise the concept of social inclusion including its possibilities in the Australian context. At this time of so-called decline in neo-liberalism, what does social inclusion mean for Australians, how important is being included, what does inclusion mean, what do we mean by community resilience?

Professor Steven Schwartz, Vice Chancellor of Macquarie University, will give the welcome remarks and the Hon. Senator Ursula Stephens, Parliamentary Secretary Assisting the Prime Minister for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, will open the forum. The panel of speakers include

  • Clare Martin, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS),
  • The Hon. Linda Jean Burney, MP, Minister for Community Services and Minister for Women,
  • Professor Paul Smyth, General Manager of the Research & Policy Centre at the Brotherhood of St Laurence and Professor of Social Policy, Centre for Public Policy at the University of Melbourne, and
  • Craig Stephens, member of Salvation Army, Macquarie Park

The Macquarie University Singers (MUS) will perform towards the beginning of the evening before the Vice Chancellor welcomes the panelists and guests. The audience will include key people from the community services, political, academic and industry sectors along with other important members of the public. We encourage you to come prepared with questions for the panelists.

Please RSVP your participation by Wednesday, 18 November to or to Ashley Soytemiz on (02) 9850 9171.
